Bird Flu Feared in Balkans" Rhodopes Area, Bourgas, Burgas
Greece has reported on another three cases of suspected bird flu in dead swans found in the area of the Halkidiki Peninsula and the Rhodopes, northern Greece.
Samples from the birds were sent to the Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) in Weybridge, London, for further laboratory tests.
A day earlier, tests confirmed the deadly bird flu virus in two more dead swans in northern Greece.
So far, tests conducted in Britain have confirmed seven swans found dead around Thessaloniki to be positive for the H5N1 virus.
Greek authorities have ordered all poultry farmers to keep their birds in coops, and have also set up disinfection programs within a 10-km radius of the infected sites near Thessaloniki.
The government has banned the sale of live birds in markets and forbidden hunting in the affected area.
An information campaign directed to the public has been launched in the regions of Thessaloniki and Pieria.
In Evros, northeast Greece, tens of thousands of migrating swans are being fed in order to stay at a specific region and not move to populated areas in search of food.
