BULGARIA TO SELECT MOST ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY ROUTE FOR BOURGAS-ALEXANDROUPOLIS , Bourgas, Burgas
Environment and Water Affairs Minister Djevdet Chakurov plans to deny approval to any environmental effects evaluation of the Bourgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline that fails to guarantee protection of the environment and public health.
Chakurov expressed his position before members of the Bourgas municipal council work committee. He also engaged with evaluation of the possible problems that could result from the project, an Environment and Water Affairs Ministry press release said.
The committee members said that they were worried oil from the pipeline could spill and pollute the Black Sea. Such a spill could discourage tourism and fishing in the region, which are main means of living for the local population, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.
Chakurov called on the local authorities in Bourgas to take an active role in the discussions of the environment effects evaluation.
The investor in the project will make the evaluation, but the municipality can also hire other experts for independent analysis.
Chakurov also said that the Environment and Water Affairs Ministry would launch large-scale discussions, and would co-operate with local authorities.
The pipeline route will be planned to prevent the risk of Black Sea pollution and damage to the Natura 2000 areas
