Demetra Intercommunity Center in Bourgas is an organization with long-term experience in working with marginalized groups. The Organization is profiled in specialized social activities and services for these groups. The Organization has a highly qualified team of social workers, psychologists and consultants, as well as significant experience in working with volunteer students in Social Work of the Bourgas Free University. The Organisation is experienced in implementing projects for socially disadvantaged groups and in particular re-socialization of convicted persons.
Main goals:
- providing support to individuals and socially disadvantaged groups;
- developing alternatives to imprisonment, carrying out behavior correction programs for individuals with destructive behavior and offenders;
- developing and implementing re-socialization and reintegration programs for socially disadvantaged groups;
- enhancing professionalism of specialists working in these areas;
- recruiting and training volunteers.
Approaches:
- organising events aimed at increasing the public awareness on problems facing socially disadvantaged groups;
- creating consultancy programs and centers;
- publicizing specialized information;
- building multidisciplinary teams;
- consulting; providing individual and group psychosocial therapy;
- social assistance;
- cooperation with all governmental institutions;
- working in multidisciplinary teams;
- issuing guide books, organizing training groups and conducting seminars.
Leadership and team
The Foundation’s managing body is the Board of Directors, which consists of four persons:
1. Associate Prof. Dr. Pavlina Petkova Damianova – psychologist
2. Pavel Penev Todorov – social worker
3. Diana Georgieva Videva – social worker
4. Zlatina Manolova Kasurova – Dukova – lawer
The Foundation is represented by its Chairman, Pavel Penev Todorov. Part of the Foundation’s basic volunteer team includes the Tolerance Clubs members, Roma students in the Bourgas Free University. The Club was established in cooperation with the District Roma Union.
Main activities:
2003 – Horizons Project – a System for Information and Social Support to Convicted Persons
The project was implemented in partnership with the Center for Socialization of Offenders and Members of Risk Groups – Pazardjik and the Association for Personality and Human Communities’ Development – Pleven. The project’s main goal was to develop a model of a social system for disseminating information, monitoring and providing adequate social services to convicted persons.
2004 – Project: Limiting Offences among Roma Juvenile Delinquents
The project’s goal was to limit recurrent offences among Roma juvenile delinquents by providing a social service package designed to facilitate their re-socialization throughout the sentence period and after release from prison.
The project was financed in the framework of the 2001 Civil Society Development Program in partnership with the Open Society Club – Bourgas and the District Roma Union – Bourgas.
